echo-terza is a Seconda (Terza) and Microtonal Scale system for any synth/MIDI setup. It works either separately or in combination, with Root/Transpose control, Note/Chord Finder, and complete MIDI Mapping.
Echo-Terza
Complete Guide & Instructions
What is Echo-Terza?
Quick Start
- Open Terza or Scale (only one active at a time; or Both for combination).
- Choose Root (C…B) and Preset (Major/Minor etc. for Terza or scale for Scale).
- If needed, set Transpose (e.g. +2 semitones). Everything adjusts correctly (Terza & Scale).
- Select Mono/Poly according to your instrument/host (see §5).
- Play. Tap on the piano to quickly change note/target depending on the mode.
Interface
Terza On/Off: Enables second voices (Seconda) according to the selected Terza preset and Root.
Scale (Microtonal) On/Off: Enables microtonal rendering of scale notes.
Both: Terza and Scale simultaneously.
Root & Transpose: Root: C–B. Transpose: in semitones. Everything you hear is transferred correctly (Terza & Scale).
Piano Keys: In Terza mode: tap for quick target change. In Scale/Microtonal: tap to mark/unmark scale note (if Scale is active).
Terza & Scale Functions
Terza (Seconda): Produces second voice based on preset (Major/Minor etc.) and Root. Changing Transpose or Root, the result remains theoretically correct everywhere (doesn't "go out of tune").
Scale (Microtonal): Applies microtonal tuning to selected scale notes. Default Pitch Bend Range: –60 (instant change by tapping the value and entering new value). When entering a note, a picker appears; you can set manual offset per note.
Important: Terza and Scale are independent functions. Work them separately or open Both when you want both together.
Mono / Poly Modes
Terza in Poly: Works immediately and "catches" on all instruments/MIDI without special setup.
Terza in Mono (Seconda on 2nd channel scenario): You must set a second sound on your synth to MIDI In: Channel 2. The seconda is sent there. Select sound & channel 2 and you're ready.
Scale (Microtonal) in Mono/Poly: In Mono it works everywhere. In Poly, often requires "mirroring" sound/path to apply correctly (depends on synth/host).
MPE / Pitch Bend: Microtonal here works with Pitch Bend. For polyphonic microtonal, check if your instrument supports MPE or special formats. For synths with SysEx microtuning, Echopais provides a separate Scaler app that speaks native SysEx (more accurate, less setup).
Chord Finder (Terza)
- Map a button from your instrument to Chord Finder.
- Press the mapped button and play the chord: e.g. C–E–G → C Major, C–E♭–G → C Minor. The app recognizes the key and automatically sets the corresponding Terza preset regardless of transposition.
- Special presets (e.g. Hijaz, HijazKiar, Sabah): Hijaz: C–E–G + C# → C Hijaz, Sabah: C–E–G + D# → C Sabah. With three fingers like the classics; the additional note determines the path.
Note Finder (Scale)
- Map a button to Note Finder.
- Press the button and then the notes you want: the app marks microtonal offsets on the selected notes.
- Press again without selection to clear.
MIDI Mapping & Map Manager
Mapping/Learn: Learn any hardware button/slider to app functions.
Map Manager (press & hold): View/change mapped controls and activation pole (Momentary or Toggle).
Global "MIDI Switch Toggle": Changes overall activation type for trigger buttons (Momentary/Toggle).
Panic: Immediate all-notes-off if a note "sticks".
Auto Mono/Poly & Sound Recognition
Two automation methods:
- Portamento CC Auto: Recognizes mono/poly from Portamento. Fast, ~80% reliability.
- Auto Sound Recognition (Learn): You learn the sound as Mono or Poly once. Then, when you select the same sound, the app automatically returns to the correct mode. More reliable for live.
Settings
- MIDI In/Out & Channel Routing: Port selection and channel routing.
- Seconda Volume: Volume of the second voice (Terza).
- Latency: How "tight" the second voice plays with you.
- Note Range: Range/octaves where Terza or Scale are applied.
- MIDI Learn Options: Settings for toggle buttons/auto modes (Portamento Auto & Sound Recognition).
- PC/MPE Mode: For hosts/instruments that support MPE, enable MPE in the plugin/instrument for correct poly microtonal.
- Scale Custom: In Custom mode you create your own scale for Terza—you define for each note which "partner note" will function as Seconda.
- Pitch Bend Range (Microtonal): Default –60. Touch it and enter the value you want.
- Synth Tips: Check your synth's MIDI settings and set sounds correctly for the corresponding mode (Mono/Poly, channels, MPE etc.).
Presets
Save/load Terza or Scale presets. If you change mode, the preset automatically adapts to the corresponding system.
Best Practices
- For Terza-Mono: always set a second sound on CH2.
- For Microtonal Poly: prefer MPE-capable instruments/hosts or double channel/sound where needed.
- Keep consistent Pitch Bend Range between app and synth.
- Use Sound Recognition for reliable auto Mono/Poly in live.
